Pokemon Liquid Crystal Phone
To get the stones for the first time (you can get extras in crystal as R194 said) you must go to Route 25. If you've played Red/Blue you'll remember it as Bill's house. There an old man will ask you to show him certain pokemon. I don't recall what the specific pokemon are, but I'm sure you can find that information in one of the FAQ's.

If you are trading a Pokémon to a friend and you wish to give them a message, you have the ability of attaching a mail to the Pokémon. The mail come in a variety of styles. In the original Gold & Silver games, you could manually write the mail and place anything you wanted on it. However, in later games, it got restricted to to a massive selection set phrases. The mail is all one-use only and if you remove it from a Pokémon, the mail gets sent to your in-game PC.

If you are trying to train your Pokémon's Effort Values, Vitamins are a handy tool to utilise. Most vitamins add 10 Effort Values into a particular stat. There is a limit to how much you can do this, with the recent limit being that the Vitamins only add to the first 100 Effort Values in the stat. All vitamins are one-use only and they all slightly boost the Pokémon's happiness.
